Put Your Hand In a Bucket of Water

A friend* of mine told me a story about when he left a job after a substantial tenure. My friend wondered how much he would be missed by his coworkers. A colleague of his told him that he should put his hand in a bucket of water and then remove it. The void that is left behind is how much he will be missed.
I think there's a lot of truth to that analogy. When we leave a place we miss having the people around, and we miss how they did the work, but people fill in the void that is left.

* Because he called me Joseph McCarthy the last time I attributed his full name to a quote I will not mention Dale Mensch by name this time.
